Full Walkthrough: Room by Room - MONOCHROME Wiki
The complete escape route in order, from the sealed starting chamber to the moment the elevator closes, with the loop you should be walking between each stop.
Overview
This is the complete route for a full escape, written as one continuous path instead of a list of tips. It assumes nothing about your previous runs and covers the sealed chamber, the boarded exit, the corridor loop, all four key stops and the final elevator panel. Read it once before you play, then keep it open on a second screen if you get turned around.
Full Gameplay Reference
This recording follows the same route described below, including both key pickups and the final panel interaction. It is the quickest way to confirm a corridor before you commit to it in your own run.
The Escape Route in Order
Follow these stages in sequence. Each one hands you something the next stage depends on, which is why skipping ahead usually ends with a deadbolt you cannot open.
The only stage that can be reordered is the key searching itself, and even there a fixed order beats wandering.
Sealed chamber
Read the slides, then find the boarded door marked DO NOT ENTER and hold E until the planks come away.
Descend the stairs
Below the door the corridor network begins. Walk it once at normal pace and mark the closets as you pass them.
Clear the far corridor
Search the rooms at the far end first, since the creature is usually closer to the spawn side early on.
Work back through the loop
Return through the loop searching each remaining room, keeping the noise behind you as you go.
Open the deadbolts
Each key unlocks one deadbolt. Open them as you collect rather than hoarding keys, so a late death costs less.
Enter the panel code
In the bright elevator area, input 5343 on the four-digit panel and finish the final interaction to end the run.
Why the Corridor Order Matters
The level is built as a loop rather than a straight line, which means every room is technically reachable at any time. That freedom is a trap for new players, because it lets them wander into the creature's active lane without realising they crossed it.
Searching the far corridor first gives you something valuable: a quiet, already-cleared area to retreat into if a chase starts. If you clear the near rooms first, the only space behind you is the region you just filled with noise.
The route below is not the fastest possible line through the level, and it is not meant to be. It is the line that leaves you with an escape option at every stage of the run.
Stage Checklist
Use this as a progress tracker during a run. Reading it in order also shows you how much of the level is already behind you when something goes wrong.
| Stage | Location | Done When |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sealed spawn chamber | Boarded door is open and the stairs are clear |
| 2 | Stairwell | You have walked the corridor loop once |
| 3 | Far corridor rooms | Distant rooms are searched and quiet |
| 4 | Return loop | Remaining rooms cleared on the way back |
| 5 | Deadbolt wall | All four keys used and every lock open |
| 6 | Elevator lobby | Panel accepts the code and the ending plays |
What You Should Have After Each Stage
Running this mental checklist after every stage catches the mistake that ruins runs: pushing forward with an unfinished room behind you.
- After stage two, a rough mental map of the loop and at least two known closets.
- After stage three, the majority of your keys and a quiet region to retreat into.
- After stage four, every room searched and no deadbolts still sealed.
- After stage five, a clear path from wherever you stand to the elevator lobby.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the full walkthrough route?
A clean run following this route takes roughly eight to ten minutes. A first attempt following it for the first time usually takes twenty minutes or more.
Can I do the stages in a different order?
The key search order is flexible, but the door, the loop and the elevator have a fixed sequence. The elevator panel stays inactive until all four keys are collected.
What happens if I die halfway through?
You restart the run and lose your collected keys. Opening deadbolts as you find keys rather than hoarding them limits how much progress a single death costs you.
Where is the elevator at the end?
In the brightest area of the level. The elevator room guide describes the approach, the panel wall and the final interaction.
Do I need all four keys before the code?
Yes in practice. The panel will not register input while deadbolts remain sealed, so enter the code only after the key stage is complete.
Is this route good for speedrunning?
It is built for reliability rather than speed. Once it feels automatic, the faster line is covered in the speedrun guide.
Does the route change after an update?
It can. A September 2026 build altered the level, so recheck the corridor loop after any patch before trusting a memorised line.
